Loading...

Hundreds of motorists were trapped in a 12-hour traffic jam on Mombasa road that was caused by the heavy rains.

The traffic, which began on Saturday evening, saw vehicles stuck in the mud and an accident involving a lorry and a pickup at Lukenya, which claimed one life.

Traffic police from Machakos and Athi River police divisions intervened in an effort to clear the gridlock.

Impatient motorists had started to overlap and stalled lorries parked along the road.

Affected motorists also noted that police blamed undisciplined drivers for the mess that began on Saturday evening and went on until Sunday.

According to Machakos base commander Abdinassir Harun, they were doing everything possible to restore order to travellers still stranded on Mombasa road.

Motorists affected have reported that the snarl-up extended for approximately 20kms on the stretch before Athi River.

The situation was further worsened by heavy rains experienced in the city and a presidential motorcade that was leaving a funeral in Machakos area.

The motorcade was accused of overlapping with several other motorists in their pursuit to beat the traffic jam.

Some motorists lamented that they had ran out of fuel and asked for help to open the gridlock.
