TRA COLLECTS SH13.9 TRILLION IN 11 MONTHS

The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has revealed that it has collected revenues amounting to Sh13.9 trillion in just 11 months excluding June in the financial year 2017/18.

TRA’stax payer education director Richard Kayombo said this yesterday during an interview with The Citizen at the 42nd Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair  (DITF) on Tuesday, July 3.

He said they expect the figure to increase after completing accounting for the June revenue collection, thereby having narrowly missed their target of Sh17.21 trillion.

"If you look at the figures, from 2015/16 where we collected Sh13.0trillion, 2916/17 we collected Sh14.4 trillion, our revenue collection has been increasing on an annual basis," he said.

According to him, the revenues increased due to a number of factors including having new sources like property and billboard taxes.

He attributed the increase to the country having mixed sources of revenue collection as opposed to other countries like Nigeria which mostly depends on oil.

Elaborating, MrKayombo said that as opposed to previous years, the public was now aware of the importance of paying taxes for the country's economic development as well as social development.

"Following public's awareness, we now receive information from the public alerting us on people avoiding paying taxes, which is a plus for our revenue collections," he said.

He noted that, TRA also decided to negotiate with business people who are owed large sums of money, to enable them continue with their businesses as they continued paying the balance on a monthly basis.

However, he noted that, all the sectors contributed well in revenue collection, though contributed more than others.
